Safaricom has today through a
press release discontinued Unlimited data package to 3G handsets and 3G enabled modems. This affects the daily, weekly, and monthly packages. Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore says that they need to focus their energy on providing quality data to most of their internet users. This means that it has found unlimited internet users non value adding to them thus the need to eliminate them.
The 3G alternatives now left for internet workaholics are
Airtel Kenya and
Orange Kenya both at Ksh 2990/- for 30 days. The weekly unlimited bundle for Airtel Kenya is Ksh 750/- while that for Orange Kenya is Ksh 990/-. In addition, Airtel Kenya has a daily package costing Ksh 150/-.
For low-speed internet users,
Yu Kenya is still the best option with a monthly unlimited bundle costing Ksh 499/- as well as varied packages for weekly, weekend and daily.
With the recent reports of Safaricom losing market share, am quite sure they will lose big in this decision since those who are used to unlimited internet will unlikely use the packet data Safaricom suggests.
